Surf Barracuda - Labor Day 2024

Post by blackcloud9 »

On Labor Day sunset, I caught a legal barracuda from the surf, 28 inches, on a t-rigged white fluke in the La Jolla area.

I caught a short one from the sand in June, but this was a big surprise.

Thanks yes a novelty and very memorable event! It was almost dark, fish was pulling pretty hard at times. I was thinking a big calico. But I had no idea what it was until it was laying on the wet sand. Even then, it took me a couple of seconds to process.

I catch legal barracuda on my kayak frequently and have even seen these legals in shallow while spearfishing here on the moons (even in December!) but to actually HOOK AND LAND one from the beach sand is .... surely a once in a lifetime deal. I'm 58 and been fishing beaches since I was like 8 ;) From the "bay" beaches like tidelands with the grunion of course, cuda are pretty common.

Next up is a yellowtail from the sand, I have seen them in very shallow over the years here in Sept / Oct.

Sunday, the day before, I was out catching bonito in my kayak on my light spinning gear! September's starting off well! :!:

I hear you! The 5 bucks a gallon gas plus the fishing "fees" and the HEAT is the reason I haven't driven east to the lakes much this summer!

That’s an incredible catch! Hooking and landing a barracuda from the beach is definitely a memorable experience, especially with your extensive fishing background. It sounds like you’re having a fantastic September with great fishing adventures both from the kayak and the beach. Good luck with your quest for a yellowtail—those can be quite the challenge and a fantastic addition to your fishing achievements. If you have any more fishing stories or need tips, feel free to share!
