Cake or Pie or ?
I was thinking about birthdays and while everybody has different tastes as far as eating cake on their birthday, I thought
about what I liked.I am mostly taking about when I was kid.... as most of us when we became adults the celebration no doubt
included lots of alcohol and food consumption but somehow there is usually a birthday cake.
OK, I never admit to being normal(McFish and Fisheromen are probably laughing their heads off)but when I was young
after experiencing a number of birthday cakes, I actually preferred a slice of Lemon Meringue pie over a piece of birthday cake.
I mean heck, my mom would ask me what type of cake I wanted but one year I asked for Lemon Meringue pie. I believe I was in
4th grade and that suddenly became a birthday tradition for me. I do like cake, but heck, but when it is my birthday, I want what
I want....and still make it happen every November.
OK...now how about you guys/gals out there? No need to be embarrassed as I shared mine...ha ha
Is there a special preference to a certain type of cake, pastry, pie or whatever that you enjoy on your birthday?

Definitely cheesecake…
..no wait, maybe carrot cake…
… or Boston Cream…
..Check that - raspberry Bavarian cream…
…but what about the Texas sheet cake my mom used to make?
Too many good options.

A real pumpkin pie with a bit of spice and real whipped cream...who am I kidding...dump a whole tube of Cool Whip on there and I'd still hammer it down.

When I was growing up, my mother would pester me to pick something sweet for birthday (because she wanted something sweet). Pecan pie or cheesecake would be what I would pick. Although once I had her make passion fruit meringue pie, that was very good too. Personally, I would prefer sashimi or rare steak over sweets, more of a protein guy.
Worst ever desert was the raisin pie she used to make.
As far as whipped cream, I had some coconut whipped cream from Sprouts recently. Very good if you like coconut (I do).
Who hasn't sucked down Cool Whip straight from the can? My kids favorite way to consume it. Trivia: nitrous oxide is used to make canned whipped cream as it dissolves in the cream under pressure (much better than air) and when the pressure is released, makes it foam.

The cool whip part brought back lots of memories. I did enjoy it straight out of the can, but my parents started buying the tubsGotfish? wrote: Thu Jul 18, 2024 6:07 am When I was growing up, my mother would pester me to pick something sweet for birthday (because she wanted something sweet). of Cool Whip and the amount I would put on a dessert was crazy! I would even randomly go in and scoop out some and inhale it
as it was so good. Pumpkin pie was never a favorite of mine but if I had a thin(I mean thin!) slice I wouldcover it with
Cool Whip 5 times the size of the piece of the pie. I always remember my father saying "geez, we are almost out of Cool Whip
again?...I just bought this" when he went in to have a little. I would just smile and say "Mom eats it too!"

Triggered. Some of us are very particular about the nomenclature of our partially hydrogenated, guar-gum-and-high-fructose-corn-syrup, dairy-adjacent foodlike materials. Cool Whip is in a tub. Reddi Whip (among others) is the stuff in a can. Come for the fake whipped cream, stay for the nitrous.

Pie over cake any day…. Not a fan of lemon meringue or pumpkin though… Favorite is wild Oregon black berry pie or cobbler.. As kid we would visit family in Glendale Oregon ( little logging town) and pick wild black berries and raspberries until our hands were almost permanently stained blue.. My Mom and Aunt would can a lot, but also made the best pies and cobblers.. Farmed blackberries don’t cut it.. A few years back I went up for a cousin’s funeral, and a couple of the older ladies at the little local church made some pies… Just like the old days.. I can still taste them…

What a fun tradition to have! Lemon Meringue pie is a unique choice for a birthday treat, and it's great that you've stuck with it over the years. It sounds like it holds a special place in your celebrations!
As for others, preferences can vary widely. Some might stick to classic chocolate or vanilla cakes, while others might lean toward more unique flavors like red velvet or carrot cake. Some people even opt for non-cake desserts like cheesecakes, ice cream cakes, or fruit tarts.
A lot of folks have childhood favorites that carry into adulthood, just like you. There’s something nostalgic about those flavors and memories associated with them! Do you have any particular memories or family traditions tied to your Lemon Meringue pie celebrations?
