Any YFC anglers out there having success?

Post by MistrRocko »

As a majority shore based angler, I used to be able to get into them somewhat reliably in a couple spots around Fiesta Island and in SD Bay but these days the only ones I get are the occasional bycatch while spottie fishing. I understand that not everyone wants to share their exact spots sometimes, I'm just hoping for a nudge in the right direction where I might be able to find a few. I haven't kept a fish from the bay in probably 15 years but if I ever found a really solid spot for them I'd probably keep 2-3 a month to cook up. I know they can be found in the surf but I'm a terrible surf angler and I really enjoy fishing for them in the bay on light gear to get the miniature redfish experience in San Diego.

You can catch plenty of them in the channel off Grand Caribe park. Just be careful as they don’t recommend you eat more the 1 serving a week for men and Women over 50 and don’t recommend you feed any to Women under 50 or children under 17

Honestly at this time of year it's probably much much easier to get them from the surf than in the bays from shore. Just use a carolina rig with a small grub or sand crabs.

I agree with @KamWalsh . Once summer rolls around the surf would be my first destination to look for YFC. The river side of the South Mission Bay jetty would be my other destination.

Good call on the river side of the jetty. Haven't fished there since whenever the last time I pumped ghost shrimp was but have had pretty good success there

Usually when I pump ghost shrimp and then fish from that side I catch mostly wrasse, an occasional calico or sand bass and a few sargo but never any croaker. But I don't do it often enough and at very random times throughout the year so that may be why too. Yes summer time seems to be best to catch them in the surf, I think they focus hard on that sand crab spawn

That's a beauty!

Opposite side of Bali Hai when they had that smaller bait barge used to be a hot spot for croaker and corvina for me way back in the day. Had many good days and one once in a lifetime every cast feeding frenzy day

I wasn't targeting YFC at all either. We were after spotties or halis, since I caught those last weekend. He just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time, for me! It was so hot and humid, and the water was barely moving at all with the rising tide. Literally the "one more cast" situation before I threw in the towel. Got 4 fish tacos out of him lol
