The vast Santa Barbara Channel extends just beyond the Santa Barbara shores, making for some excellent recreational fishing. Local fishermen bring in wild-caught white sea bass, black cod, ling cod, yellowtail, rockfish, halibut, swordfish, tuna, thresher shark, urchin, crab, shrimp, lobster, whelk, sea cucumber - more than 50 species in total!
Santa Barbara lakes also provide plenty of good fishing opportunities.
CACHUMA LAKE RECREATION AREA
Cachuma Lake is one of Southern California's finest fishing lakes because of the lake-bottom topography of rocky drop-offs, shallow areas, and aquatic plant beds - all great habitat for different kinds of fish. During normal (non-drought) years, it supports large populations of large mouth and small mouth bass, crappie, bluegill, red-ear sunfish, channel catfish, and rainbow trout.
LAKE CASITAS RECREATION AREA
Lake Casitas is one of the premier fishing lakes in the region and is known for its world class bass fishing. Four of the 10 largest bass have been caught at Lake Casitas. In addition to largemouth bass, the lake is filled with rainbow trout, crappie, red-ear sunfish, bluegill and channel catfish. Record fish in all categories have been caught throughout the years. Night fishing until 11:00 PM from the shorelines is held on selected weekends when the moon is full and weather permits.
