I have been seeing pictures of guys catching big halibut but I'm not having any luck. I catch lots of short ones. Sometimes in the same spot, same tide, same gear, I'll get 6, and another day, zero bites.
Are the halibut generally in the bays right now, and not in the surf? I catch them in the surf ...

Re: New to shore fishing and skunked for a week
This is the bay fishing forum, so I hope I am not stepping out of line with my post, but I have found during summer months that surf fishing from the beach is quite productive. I get more action on the beach than I do in the bay, but I am mainly a surf fisher. From your post, it sounds like you ...

Took a trip down Memory Lane with shrimp pump in hand. Historically, good bite on incoming tide and today followed the pattern. '

Mission bay 8/10
This Sunday was rougher than the last. Spent a good bit of time working some new baits with little to no luck. 20 fish total a mixed bag of spotties and calicos. Few of the spotties being legal or just shy of it. Most were caught on the incoming tide in the morning. Bite shut down for me around 9 ...

Re: Braid and Leader Line
:) I’ve been working my way up. I mostly fish 30 braid, with 15 pound Flourocarbon or Maxima Clear for Topwater. I was just sick of getting my ass kicked by the big fish I hook often enough to start fishing bigger. Now I land the big Halibut, the occasional Angel Shark, and White Seabass that range ...

Point Loma trip last weekend. Bahhhhh
We mostly fished the kelp at high tide with plastics, loaded up on grumpys in the bay afterward too. Total we got some small calicos, 1 legal sandbass, couple grass rockfish, and the kicker sheep.

Re: Hook size for surf C-rig
For the c rig, I use a #6 mosquito and tie a snell knot. That’s for the gulp sand worm and sand crab.

To answer the question, I also use a #6 mosquito, but with a Palomar knot. Snelling would probably work as well or better.

Re: Hook size for surf C-rig
I also like Caivo Nanowire #10 hooks. The size is in between Owner Mosquito #6 and #8. Essentially an Owner Mosquito #7 at less than 1/2 the cost.

Mission Beach Friday 8/16/24
Fished mission beach, tower 17-18, for a couple hours this morning. Little to no grass or kelp. After a slow start the tide filled in some and some holes showed up. I walked around a hole jerking perch out, moderate action.

Nice To Get Out
Not much of a report, but I manged to get out to Alamitos Bay Peninsula for the 1st fishing in over a month.. It was only going to be a short trip, 'cause I'm still trying to shake a bug I caught... I was using some ghost shrimp I bought at Big Fish in Seal Beach... 1st cast and the shrimp didn't ...

Surf Barracuda - Labor Day 2024
On Labor Day sunset, I caught a legal barracuda from the surf, 28 inches, on a t-rigged white fluke in the La Jolla area.
I caught a short one from the sand in June, but this was a big surprise.

Re: Surf Session Planning
Agree with all the earlier comments & just to add my 2 cents. I try to always fish 2 hours on both sides of a high or low. My experience has been the bite slows /shuts off during the middle 2 hours of the tide swing. I usually don't fish if the swell/wave interval is forecasted to be less than 10 ...

Pacific Beach Update
Got out to PB on Tuesday this week. Tide was about an hour coming in off the earlier -0.1 low; water temp was probably about 58. Found a decent hole straight out from PB Drive (about 1/4 mi south of pier). Started with a jerk bait for hali's but too much salad, mostly heavy grass. Before going to a ...

Re: Pacific Beach Update
I cleared it all out for you this morning Butch, real good conditions, low surf, temp about 60 on an ebbing tide. Unfortunately, still no action, just a few soft bites around mid tide. Still micro crabs under the pier. I'm sure they'll show up and the bite turn on when you get here ! So can you do ...
