Re: Keeping Mackeral for a few days.

If you do freeze it, cut it into the pieces that you are going to use first and remove as much moisture as possible with a paper towel first. If its only a few days I'd stick with the fridge or ice-chest. Pat down with a paper towel every day or two. I used to save macks for shark bait when I was a ...

Re: C&R gone too far?

2 factors at play in any body of water when talking about the size or growth rate of fish. first is how much bio-mass a place can hold, not just about volume of water but quality of the water, vegetation, structure, forage etc. the second is the number of fish in the system, that includes all fish ...

Re: Looking for a trout reel

I use sienna and sedona 1000 and 2500 respectively and love them both, I might check out the stratic when its time to upgrade/replace but I have never retired a shimano reel of any kind that I bought new or used.

Re: Hodges report March 20

The fact that they can't afford to have the facilities open 365 days a year is already BS IMO, and don't even get me started on closing at night even for shore fishing... I'm glad I fish mostly saltwater now.

Re: Hook size for surf C-rig

The size is less important than the style, if fishing sand crabs I will use a red or gold mosquito hook that is wider than the crabs I'm using, I like the hook exposed some. this will still result in some deep hooked fish though, I carry hemostats, debarbing the hook would be a good idea if you are ...

Re: If Could Only Bring Three Baits…

Bluegill pattern Spinnerbait 3/8oz
albino zoom swimming fluke jr on 1/8oz darter head
1/4 football head finnese jig, big-bites 3" craw trailer.

(for numbers, D/S robo worm, senko and 3.8 kitech)

But honestly the best 3 baits at Barret(or anywhere) are the 3 you are best at fishing.

Re: How many have found a lure and fished it???

I've never found or caught any lures i thought were worth fishing, but I did snag a pole with a Curado bantam CU-200 off of the pier, cleaned all the sand out of it and replaced 2 of the 5 bearings, fished that reel for years after. and yes caught many fish.

Re: How many have found a lure and fished it???

Were those the old green tanks? A nuclear war could break out and the only 2 things that would be left standing would be roaches, and those green Curados.

I had one of those, but for some reason, it was red and not green.

yup, still have a cu-200, cu-200BSF and CA-200 (Castaic, has a sweet ...

Re: Bonito

Not from the piers, there has been some offshore, and at the islands, keep an eye on the 1/2 day boat counts and when they start catching them you can try your luck from the big dock. Its not looking like a good year for them inshore...

Re: First Fish

Hard to beat that setup for numbers, I'm surprised no one caught a halibut.

side note:
careful with the regs, I believe most of the back bay is closed to boat based angling and only shore fishing is allowed east of the big bridge. always was frustrating not to be able to make a cast until getting ...

Re: Native Rainbow Trout

Wish i had the time to investigate all my hunches but with only about 1 day a month to spend it exploring somewhere or on a boat on the ocean I guess it’s just a shot in the dark and a nice hike if nothing else…

Re: Favorite lure of 2024

4" Kitech easy shiner, caught Calico, sandbass, spotted bay bass, and LMB.
3" version catches trout and smallmouth too, but didn't do much of that this year.

Re: San Diego Bay Fishing: I Found Them!

FYI, an easy way to make underspins and other baits weedless is to add a jig spinner which also adds extra flash. They were hammering the underspin with it a few weeks ago for me. Add a swivel about 12-24" before it and that will catch most of the dead grass too.

I like fishing in the rain as ...
