Re: Eastern Sierra whitewater report

So on the way home, spotted a medium-sized herd of elk in the wildlife viewing area. This is where the pastures are watered all summer to grow grass, and the elk come down to hang out an fatten up for the winter.

This group of about two dozen included one bull, who only had one antler. They were ...

Big bay, Coronado and Cays

Fished Coronado early Friday morning....11 SBB and a micro halibut.
Anchored up in a shallowish spot and tried my hand at working plastics on the bottom....with a foot-and-a-half chop when the wind picked up.

Didn't work. What's weird is that I get seasick like a woodchipper when I get on a boat ...

Re: Lake Hodges sad news

Here's what happens when someone at a TV station goes looking for internet drama. If anyone can find anything to support the claim that the lake is polluted, I'd be interested in seeing it.

The eleven billion gallons, btw, has alread been released; that's the tally for the last year.

But in ...

Sand is much softer than the silt in the channel, easier on old worn out shoulders. You can get to the shrimp fairly easily any time the tide is at +1 foot (and lower, of course).

Expanded access to Vacation Isle

Paradise Point resort on Mission Bay has violated the state Coastal Act for years. That’s about to change

That's the title of the U-T story...you can google it for details.

THE GIST:
There's gonna be more unimpeded shore access all the way around Vacation Isle. And maybe more paths through the ...

Re: Still picking away at the "polluted" lake

In a "fake news" story on the local news, they referred to Lake Hodges as being closed to windsurfing because it was "polluted". This is not true in a number of ways including:
1. that is not the actual reason
2. it was never closed for pollution
3. it is not polluted

Re: fishing spot between Liberty Station park and Corvette diner

Those jumping fish...If they're big silver fish with white bellies coming out of the water two or three feet, those are mullet. And unlike the highly functional, always fashionable haircut that shares their name, these fish are very difficult to acquire. They are largely vegetarian and don't often ...

Using bay charts if you don't have a fishfinder...

Zoom in and out of this image…most of bay is visible, with depths if you control/scroll wheel…

I use it to identify spots that are close to where I can launch a float tube, and figure out how to fish them. If this chart shows 10 feet ...

Re: Cuyamaca State Park Fishing

There's always something to see around that area. Take a camera; nice pics from the top of Stonewall Peak (on a clear day you can see Mt. San Jacinto). And just parking at Green Valley Falls offers some good wildlife options.....this was in February a few years back...

Almost....with the homebrew spinner....

Spent a few hours on the South Platte River in Colorado. Monday, Elevenmile Canyon. 64 and sunny in the afternoon.

Are you smarter than a fish?

Sometimes I am not.

Had a couple spinning rods with me and tied up a dropshot on the lightest rod to fish a tiny, shallow pool in Creek X.
Nyet.
The next spot had potential for bigger fish. And it is accessed from a bank about 3 feet above the creek.
At one point i cut off the dropshot sinker and ...

Re: Cuyamaca State Park Fishing

I got tecnu and it worked.
A few years back, I went on a short adventure with a guy whose occupation is removing pot grows from public land.
So I asked him what they use after wallowing in poison oak.
"Dawn."
Been using it ever since and no poison oak rash.

Re: Ghost Shrimp Locations IN Mission Bay

Plain Cotton thread works fine. You only need special fishing thread if you wear special fishing shirts. And special fishing shorts. Or if you just want to feel special.

If you're not using a spinning rod, and a carolina rig, stop reading. You're wasting your time reading this, and you're wasting ...

Do fish even care?

Saturday I was using a sorta leftover goofed-up lure. Was supposed to be two tone green/chartreuse, but the green layer came out too thick and not opaque...hard to see the 3D eyes glaring through.

Re: Ghost Shrimp Locations IN Mission Bay

I used to have an issue keeping the bait on the hook when casting. Now I've figured out around that but it doesn't stay on long enough once on the bottom because the wrasse gnaw it off. So I've always been meaning to do it with the thread but does that help with the wrasse?

Hope you packed a ...

Re: Best and worst candy

Best? Heath Bar. Mounds. Swedish Fish. And for some odd reason....not candy corn, but the "Autumn Mix" that has candy corn, the chocolate-tipped candy corn, and the pumpkins. Yes, it's like eating a vanilla-scented candle between slugs of Karo syrup. I buy a small bag every year, and that's enough ...

Re: Fish recipes

Been cooking up the halibut caught last weekend. Just cooking in a pan with a little oil, putting it on a plate with soy sauce, tartar sauce or lemon juice on each forkful. Or tuna quesadillas.

But last night I was stuffed and still had a cooked piece. Mashed it up with a fork, added mayo, pepper ...
