End of year in a frozen land.

Well, my fishing year ended with not much of a bang up in prairieland. Most of the lakes to the north of where I live are frozen over, and much of the north end of Flaming Gorge is frozen over also. SinceI have no desire to shuffle out on frozen water, I have been driving south to hit warmer areas ...

Poor man's slow pitch jig mold

I used 20+ year old Fix It All, modeling clay and a knock off 100g jig to make a slow pitch jig mold. It's not perfect, but it was a fun little project.

Willpower.. when not Bass fishing

IMG_0647.jpg
On a day like today where we are experiencing lots and lots of rain and I am not fishing, I woke up early, grabbed a cup of coffee and started my morning off checking out bass fishing videos on YouTube. It is amazing how many bass fishing videos are out there. I kept watching more and ...

Re: Willpower.. when not Bass fishing

I like the sales cons, "Give 'em something they haven't seen". Well, bass have seen bluegill and crawdads and frogs and they still like them. They like the old 35 MM film containers wrapped in tin foil, used as poppers, I saw a guy catch 35 bass one morning on a film container. All he had was that ...

Re: Willpower.. when not Bass fishing

Seriously , though, Why can't I just have one tackle box like Grandpa did?

My father inherited an old tackle box from his uncle when he was a kid which had all types of old wooden baits in it and other type baits.
I still have all of them and many looked kind of line early versions of swimbaits ...

Re: If you think Daiwa's T-wing is juuust a bit busy....

The line comes off the spool like a spinning reel: No backlashes.
The line winds on the spool like a baitcaster: No line twist.

Obviously this is the ultimate reel, and it was shut down by Big Fishing. They want to control you!

Re: Tip of the day

Carry a couple of jugs of fresh water (I use 1gal Arizona Tea containers). After fishing in the saltwater, I rinse off my gear with the fresh water before the ride home and give a more thorough rinse at home. I keep a large plastic cup in the truck and fill it will fresh water and throw all my flies ...

Re: Upper Otay??

Has anyone fished upper Otay in the recent past? I fished lower Otay a couple weeks f weeks ago and decided to hike up there afterward. I'd never been up there before. It looks like it should hold fish albeit not very accessible. Inquiring minds is all.

I haven't explored there in about 5 ...

Re: Upper Otay??

All of the sporadic water quality tests that CDFW has conducted over the last several years have shown anoxic conditions and extremely high conductivity (salinity amongst other minerals) in the water. No one knows why, but the development in addition to natural conditions could be the reason. I ...

Keep our Lakes Open

Hey guys, Everydog has been busting his butt to help save our fishing venues for a long time.
He has always gone out of his way doing anything he can possibly do and we should all acknowledge him for his great efforts.
Anyway, this is a critical time that instead of just laying back, we all need ...

Re: Filamentous Algae

Our local pond used to get treated with a blue dye that limits the amount of vegetation growth during the summer months. But, because of budget issues, it has been left to fend for itself, and this lake is now full of this snot.

A few days ago, as I'm walking around it, I see a peculiar sight ...

How to remove a hook from a gut hooked bass

Every few years we get a few new fishermen on here that could use this knowledge.

Half of the patterns we use to catch Bass involve the bait getting swallowed. A hook is caught in the gut of the bass, making it hard to remove. If you just pull it straight out you’re killing the fish. There’s a ...

Re: How to remove a hook from a gut hooked bass

this is a great video as far as showing what it looks like inside the fish's mouth; how to grab and turn the hook. But a pair curved forceps makes the process like butter, and even works on much smaller fish....waaaaay smaller fish.

three bucks on amazon for a set of 5 1/2 inch forceps. $6 for the ...

Lithium Battery Warning

Hey all,
Just a Public Service Announcement kind of thing. I got home last weekend from fishing the bay, emptied my car, cleaned my gear and was so tired I basically just ate and went to bed. I had left a few non-essential items in my car and thought nothing of it.

I got up the next morning to ...

Re: Favorite lure of 2024

Just ordered a few more of Ned Senko and 3” 4” Yama Craw (same floating formulae as Ned Senko). I normally use 1/16oz head but got the 4” one for 1/10 Zman shroom weedless head or free rig.

Re: Favorite lure of 2024

Square bill: I've used it more this year. The hits are hard! A "running the bank" pattern on any moving bait lure is always fun.

Saltwater jerk bait is more of a theory, but I got pretty nuts buying it. I need to go out more after local/surf fish. I caught just short of legal halibut on my first ...

Re: Favorite lure of 2024

For the last several years, I would put down the Tokyo rig, but this year just Texas rigged baits with a sinker stop.
I never used a sinker stop with a Texas rig before, but now rig it that way with creature, crawbait or plastic worms.
