Re: Eastern Sierra whitewater report

20230810_155424.jpg Reds Meadows and Pumice Flat open. Other campgrounds too swampy. The Postpile is open for day use. Got 8 browns in the postpile area on Thursday. Small and micro.
All caught on the new spinners...dubbed the Patient Zero. The trout catching epidemic starts now...

Re: Eastern Sierra whitewater report

On the way home, I stopped at Baker Creek Campground outside of Big Pine.

Got two little brownies out of the various creek branches. The campground is very nice, and has two ponds that probably get stocked.

I made a couple casts into a pond...snagged a broken line that had a foot-long stocker ...

Re: Eastern Sierra whitewater report

So on the way home, spotted a medium-sized herd of elk in the wildlife viewing area. This is where the pastures are watered all summer to grow grass, and the elk come down to hang out an fatten up for the winter.

This group of about two dozen included one bull, who only had one antler. They were ...

Re: Cuyamaca State Park Fishing

I was mountain biking at Cuyamaca this morning so I decided to stop by Green Valley Falls. There's plenty of water in the creek and air temperature was >90F. The ranger said that the river is not stocked and most years there is not much flow this time of year. So I doubt you will catch much if any ...

Lake Hemet

I went to Lake Hemet yesterday with my son. We threw night crawlers and power bait deep. At the same time fished around with gold and chrome Kastmasters for about four hours. Not a sniff. :(

Glad you liked it, hoping to do more of this in the sierras at some point! Maybe work on the heritage trout list.

Re: Native Rainbow Trout

So cool.
Bad knees, but mostly just lazy so I don't do this kinda thing anymore. But it reminds me of the easy-access spots along Beasore Creek (Near Yosemite), where you only have to hike a little bit to find small, very wild fish in tiny pools.

Best part of those out there areas. Good access ...

Re: Native Rainbow Trout

Most all the “Wild Trout” in So Cal are really Steelhead that can’t get to the ocean any more. These were the fish that repopulated the streams after times of extreme drought. There are some rare streams that flow East off the mountains that have never had access to the ocean. These are Purebred ...

Re: Native Rainbow Trout

They taught us different at UC Santa in 1978. Of course knowledge increases as time winds on. We sampled Fish from unnamed streams in the mountain’s behind Santa Barbara, in the back country behind Camp Pendleton, and several streams that would have emptied into Salton Sea. Our results seemed to ...

Re: Native Rainbow Trout

I just watched the tight loops video on san pedro martir. Pretty cool stuff. I doubt I'll ever get up there and even if I did, I'd may catch one or two and then leave, but it's cool to know it's there. I wonder if there's still grizzlies up there too. I hear occasionally people tell stories of ...

Re: Native Rainbow Trout

There have been a few exceptions (like Piru Creek downstream from Frenchman's Flat) where the fish I caught were really washed and and silver.

But for the most part, all the wild fish in our watersheds in SoCal are beautifully colored, still sporting their par marks that I don't think they'll ever ...

Re: San Gabriel Mts/ South Fork trout fishing( video)

Nice vid! I think that's the West Fork tho. I don't think there's a South Fork, unless you call the tailwater out of Morris Dam the South Fork, i guess.

Yeah you could be right. Really curious about the conditions for this year. any reports from anyone?

Because the West Fork is a tailwater ...

Re: Native Rainbow Trout

I believe there is a stream near Santa Barbara with a tiny population of SoCal Steelheads.

:D

I'd seriously recommend not going to any creeks in SoCal that may have Steelhead. They are federally protected and from what I've seen, you can poach all you want in lakes, but the moment you mess ...

Re: Native Rainbow Trout

Wish i had the time to investigate all my hunches but with only about 1 day a month to spend it exploring somewhere or on a boat on the ocean I guess it’s just a shot in the dark and a nice hike if nothing else…

Oregon Brown Trout

Took a 2,500 mile road trip pulling the trailer to the Cascade Mountains and everywhere in-between. Had a chance to fish Diamond Lake, about a half an hour from Crater Lake.

Took out the kayak and it was windy. Sucks because it was glass the evening before, but that's the way it goes when you want ...

Re: Oregon Brown Trout

Nice brownie.. I fished that lake with my Brother, Sister, Cousin and Stepdad when I was a kid… Best trout fishing I ever did… We all limited out 2 days running with Kamloops rainbows that averaged 2#s after being gutted.. All bright pink meat… My Mom and Aunt caned most of the fish… Just ...
