Launch Ramp etiquette

I think we can all agree to this and make launching easier.
Turn off headlights while on ramp. Headlights in next vehicle rear view mirrors is blinding.
Float tubes and Kayak users. Prepare your boat in parking lot and be ready as possible when you get to ramp. And please don't cut in front of a ...

Re: Stripers at Castaic

I believe Pyramid Lake, not far up the hill, is a much more prolific Striper Lake. Now with a population of American Shad, they can put on even more weight with a larger Food Source and well as the planted Rainbow Trout.

Re: Anthropomorphism and why fish bite lures

As someone who fishes with lures 95% of the time, I absolutely love this write-up. Thank you. Reminds me of the video 'will a fish eat a block of wood', by marlingbaits. One of the top comments on it is "I come back to this video whenever I want to spend more than $10 on a lure."

Re: Tip of the day

Some things I do with my rods:
1. Add heat shrink tubing around the tip to prevent tangles. Get some just big enough to slip past the tip and apply heat to shrink it over any edges that catch the line. You could also replace the tip with something like https://www.amazon.com/LINGUANG-Profile-Fishing ...

Time of Day - Barred Surfperch

I'd read something about surf perch biting well primarily during low light conditions and have experienced the bite shut down once things get bright on morning sessions. I got curious about the hour of the day that people are observing perch. I downloaded all 460+ barred surf perch records for CA ...

Re: Time of Day - Barred Surfperch

inaturalist folks are generally the type who pay attention to details...like waking up early to fish. Not sure that's the best data source for barred surf perch.
My experience has been that the surf bite is more dependent on tides than time of day. Around high96 tide, when the sand crabs are being ...

Turkey Day in the desert

Took a little trip out East to the land of the Canals today for an afternoon session.

Had a blast! When it’s good out there, it’s just so much fun.

Managed 10 or so largemouth and a couple smallmouth, including my first 2+ (don’t laugh, I’d never caught a Smallie until a few months ago lol) and ...

San Gabriel Mts/ South Fork trout fishing( video)

San Gabriel Mountains South Fork Trout action( video). With all the recent rains this year, this area should be prime for a fall trip and its only around 2 hours away Off I-210. Back when I did this trip, I managed 5 or 6 in a few hour session all on Berkely Power worms. It would also make for a ...

Eastern Sierra whitewater report

Many campground closed due to swampy conditions.
My jam is flicking spinners in little creeks. High, fast water limits presentation in most spots. Gonna hit parts of the San Joaquin tomorrow. Gonna have to be past the summit by 7 am to avoid the shuttle. The road to the postpile is open but the ...

Re: Eastern Sierra whitewater report

On the way home, I stopped at Baker Creek Campground outside of Big Pine.

Got two little brownies out of the various creek branches. The campground is very nice, and has two ponds that probably get stocked.

I made a couple casts into a pond...snagged a broken line that had a foot-long stocker ...

Re: Eastern Sierra whitewater report

So on the way home, spotted a medium-sized herd of elk in the wildlife viewing area. This is where the pastures are watered all summer to grow grass, and the elk come down to hang out an fatten up for the winter.

This group of about two dozen included one bull, who only had one antler. They were ...

Re: Cuyamaca State Park Fishing

I was mountain biking at Cuyamaca this morning so I decided to stop by Green Valley Falls. There's plenty of water in the creek and air temperature was >90F. The ranger said that the river is not stocked and most years there is not much flow this time of year. So I doubt you will catch much if any ...

Lake Hemet

I went to Lake Hemet yesterday with my son. We threw night crawlers and power bait deep. At the same time fished around with gold and chrome Kastmasters for about four hours. Not a sniff. :(
