Old Glory 9/16

Howdy. I wasn't gonna write this up but a fellow sdfish member inspired me to do so. I did a turn around trip so two in a row. The first trip went as follows... Arrived in the zone early enough to get a 2 hour night bite which was super surprising to me, fished hard but nothing was cooperating. Grey ...

Re: Old Glory 9/16

After the ordeal on 20 pound floro, my corktape was all scuffed up and worked. I handed the rod off to my dear friend that wraps all the reely cool good stuff. I had been under the impression that it was a 539 and fishing 40 was not an issue but under the tape it said 530. I'm superglad I never ...

Re: Struggling to catch leopard sharks from shore

Try half a mackerel and stay away from squid. When we used to use squid we ended up catching a lot more rays than leos. It'll happen, good luck

Re: Struggling to catch leopard sharks from shore

I have only caught larger leopards inside the bays. Seen 'em in the surf, but haven't caught a big one there. In my limited experience (couple dozen sharks) a fresh caught fish gets picked up more often; never got a decent sized leopard on a bait that had been frozen. The current all tackle IGFA ...

Re: Struggling to catch leopard sharks from shore

Cut bait only, stay away from squid. Looks like you have the right set up. Do not panic if you get one on, take your time don’t set the drag too tight etc. Might loose a few before you catch one. It’s all a learning process. I’m catching them in Oceanside and I’m sure they more concentrated more ...

Re: Struggling to catch leopard sharks from shore

Fresh bait is key. Old mackerel like most of the ones you buy from tadckle stores with brown, mushy meat is terrible shark bait. Either catch some from a pier and use same day/within a week or two if frozen, or catch a small perch, croaker, or corbina at the beach and cut it up. You don't need to go ...

Re: Any good tips?

Hey guys we went yesterday from like 5 to 730 and we got skunked lol, there were a lot of people in the water so it was hard to find places to cast out and got a lot of seaweed for some reason... There were a lot of sand crabs though. I'll try really early next time before people get out to the ...

Re: Any good tips?

I know many people favor Carolina rigs, but I like a single, or double hook gangion with a 1 ounce weight on the bottom. Cast over the shorebreak, keep the line tight and adjust if it moves with the current. It is less prone to tangles and doesn't collect as many weeds.

At my local beach, soft ...

Re: Struggling to catch leopard sharks from shore

Dog beach whenever the water isn't moving so right around a high or medium tide. 30lb braid is good doesn't matter if you use a leader. Carolina rig with about a half ounce with a circle hook and a whole sardine.

Mission Beach 8/28

Good conditions yesterday, water warming up, salad free. No sand crabs until an hour before the 8:45 high; most had no roe. Quite a few guys chucking flies, more than I usually see. Lot of mid size perch & missed on a medium size bean, unbuttoned right in front of me. Then, was not looking for this ...

Great fishing if you are vegan

Fished TP yesterday and it was weeds weeds weeds.
Every cast returned handfuls of weeds and sometimes big clumps.
Never seen it this bad, at least that I can remember. There have been days with kelp and weeds and was able to catch something, but not yesterday.

Re: Water got cold

This is even better than Solunar Tables for explaining why the bite was slow. Water was too cold or too warm. Now if I could just find a way to predict when the bite was going to be good instead of an excuse for a slow bite.

Got 17 spotted bay bass at Tidelands this morning. Was doing well until ...

Corbina!

Biggest one for me.
4lbs 22".

Took my grandson one morning. Brought the ligth weight for him and a bigger one for me.
Plan was to set up a rod holder and soak some squid while I help him manage the smaller one.
After about 2 minutes he was not wanting to be the patient fisherman. So I decided to ...

Changing routine can be good

Hit a beach yesterday am that hadn't been to since last year. Was targeting yellow fins at a reefy/rocky area of the beach. Usual perch suspects were around but being patient led to a good strike. Fish jumped to surface and got a good look, for sure a good size yfc but disappointedly a break off ...
