Dolphin 8/13/23
Went for a half-day trip on the Dolphin boat early morning of the 13th. The Fishing was very slow, apparently due to the water temperature dropping a few degrees overnight. Managed to get a decent Calico and a couple of whitefish in the cooler water, but that was it. Eventually, the boat relocated ...

Dorado zarrandeado
So I butterflied out a dorado to cook for my family's early labor day party. It's not a true zarrandeado since I didn't do it over hot coals but 45 min on the smoker and a few on the grill for some color does the trick.

Old Glory 9/16
Howdy. I wasn't gonna write this up but a fellow sdfish member inspired me to do so. I did a turn around trip so two in a row. The first trip went as follows... Arrived in the zone early enough to get a 2 hour night bite which was super surprising to me, fished hard but nothing was cooperating. Grey ...

Calico Bass along the reefs
Very steady beach fishing in late June. Tallied 30+ calicos, 8 short white seabass to about 22", and 2 legal halibut - all gently released except the halibut. Saw some relative beginners get a legal halibut yesterday from the rocks throwing a swimbait. :D

The other day finally caught my first fish... three small corbina which were released. Lots of kids ...

Re: Surf Fly Fishing
I keep it simple. If blind casting into structure, red worm-like flies (Krabby patty https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iplF2Q7Oo5I ). If sighting fishing beans, surfin merkin. I keep them small, size 6-8 hooks, small brass eyes.

Re: Surf Fly Fishing
Lately I've been out in the surf with the fly rod every weekend - North Torrey, Blacks, Mission and Coronado mostly. I'll be at Coronado dog beach on Sunday with the 6 weight throwing red worms or merkins. A few weeks ago a guy in our club was throwing a micro clouser and caught a striper. The 6 is ...

Mission Bay Jetty 7/30/23
Plenty of action today on the north jetty. Went out a few hours after low tide and stayed until the tide started falling.
Kelp bass, rock wrasse, perch, sculpin, and cabezon were attacking on every cast. We were throwing dropper loop rigs with shrimp on size 4 hooks, and within 10 seconds of the ...

Surf Fly Fishing Primer post from old SDFISH
The surfzone is an ever changing environment where the best locations on a beach can change from day to day, tide to tide, or even during a tide. Storm surges or heavy surf alter beaches quite rapidly. Some beaches, or even sections of beaches, will fish better on outgoing tides and others on ...

Mammoth Lakes fun!
If you like stripping streamers in shallow water, now's the time up here! I've picked up 42 fish in 2 days, ranging from 12" to 23". I'm fishing the flats in the back of Lake Mary, mostly stripping black leaches with a flashback hares ear trailer. 11 of the fish were between 20"-23" and caught in 2 ...

Avoid a website called ETacklePro
Very nice, slick website, good prices, haven't been able to find any complaints about this site, so I ordered a fly reel from it. After a couple of weeks, there was no update on the order, but the payment posted on the day of the order. Each time I checked the order number on the website, I got a ...

Too much spam
We have had waaaaay too much spam in the last two or three days. Hate to say it, but I think anybody who's name starts with "Svet" and they don't hail from anywhere in the U.S. should be banned, or else anybody who hasn't posted yet should be moderated until admins see that these people are legit ...

7-26 The Temp and the Fishing Were Hot 🔥
Got most of the way beck in Hauser by 5:30. Our first stop yielded 10 on various flukes and shad roboworms thrown at trees and the banks. We kept hearing splashes behind us so made the decision to chase boilers midlake. Nice payoff as we bagged another 21 throwing and dragging swimming minnows. Got ...

Barrett report July 26th
Hello all,
Barrett provided today. Here's the details though. Met Chuck at 0415 at pigs and we went our separate but similar ways, knowing we'd meet up later. At 0430 there was that light wind from the north and temp was already warm. Water temp was 80. I went to the mouth of Hauser and Becky's ...
