Re: Finally Happened- South Bay
I have fished Mission bay. I'm going have to try San Diego bay. I will bring 1 bigger rod to try for a bat ray or something that will tow me around.
Personally Dfishin I think you will be a quick convert to the Big Bay. I always do better there.
I really like Mission bay. Smaller area but ...

Boney Reward for Dodging Rain! 1-3-26
After watching the Beefshamen and McQuade tearing up the back bay on a recent high tide, we plotted out this weekend’s king tides to take our shot. As the week progressed we wondered if the weather would cooperate and juggled days last minute to today. Got the reward with my first bonefish and a ...

New Year, New PB
Headed out to Shelter Island around 630 for what turned into a gorgeous morning on the water. The tide was super high and not even at it's projected highest at 9ish, you can see from the point by the Bali Hai. I wasn't having much luck at my usual spots, some hits but no pins. I decided to try ...

Don't spit into the wind....
Or buck a king tide in a float tube.
Got a tow back across the bay from a buddy with a drill/prop setup on his tube. This, after the third member of our group reminded me that it was probably a bad idea to "go all the way over there unless you want to get an Uber back to your truck."
Oh well ...

South Bay 1/19
After hearing and seeing plenty of South SD bay stories from you all, I finally found a day to get my float tube down there. Went ahead and launched from J Street marina, and it wasn’t long before the action was on. Drifted all around, and worked my way north through the 2 main channels and found ...

Agua Hedionda 1/23
Hit the lagoon down the street this morning. Wanted to see how the Bixby would handle eel grass and maybe catch a couple fish. Bixby worked pretty well, but i did have to stop once to clear the prop (Old Town pedal drive needed at least 5 clearings every time in the lagoon). Love how the battery ...

WIDE OPEN Winter Bonefish (video)
With Summer like weather for most of the month the Bay has been fishing more like March then January. Water temps are 3-4 degrees above where they would normally be and the fishing has been excellent on days with good tide movement. Had a fishing for Bonefish last week with close to 40 Bonefish over ...

Multi Species Day 2-28-2026
Multi species day south of the bridge this morning with a new first. A watermelon jack Hookup bait, a bronze blade bait, and a Laguna shrimp Zman TRD Ticklerz got spotties, halibut, lizard fish, and my first yellowfin croaker ever. Steady bite on the outgoing tide from 7-11. Could not have been a ...

Re: Back Bay Striper
I believe that was tried back in the 70s or 80s. They planted catchable size stripers in the flood control channel at Mission Bay. I remember seeing people lining the channel throwing giant treble hooks (M.L. type)and snagging all the stripers! That was the end of that experiment! I imagine some of ...

Water clarity and eelgrass
Have others noticed the bay seems a lot murkier with less eelgrass than previous years?
Lack of eelgrass can decrease water clarity since the roots hold in sediment that is otherwise stirred up by the tides. And there is a positive feedback mechanism in that poor water clarity reduces the maximum ...

Re: Water clarity and eelgrass
Not sure if this is on point, but the bay doesn’t seem near as good numbers-wise the last 2-3 years. Before then it was always stupid easy and now its work.

Species Day- Back Bay
Got out for a slow but consistent day in the back bay. Thought with the really low tide the fish would be pushed towards the deeper water. Not sure if they were but there was a decent bite on small to average sides spotties, 1 bone fish, 1 halibut and 1 Midshipman. Not sure why but that fish looks ...

New tube ordered!
I finally pulled the trigger on a new float tube from Netherlands called Float Plus. Bladderless, dropstiched floor and seat, undermount motor ready, and they are installing the fold up wheels for me at no additional charge.
Of course I'll still have to glue on my fish finder mounting brackets ...

Re: All set
So with these high end tubes, what’s the reason for not building out a kayak for roughly the same cost? Why give up the extra maneuverability of a yak?
I can only speak for myself, but I like the feel of fishing from a tube better than fishing from a kayak. I may not be able to go as fast or as ...

Motorizing a float tube.
For those of you interested in adding a motor to your float tube I highly recommend Bixpy. It will mount under virtually any tube with their glue on fin mount.
I've been running a Bixpy motor under my float tubes for over 6 years now, fishing an average of 4 days per week, and it has been a ...
