Ive spent the last few weeks targeting backwater tarpon and its been a blast and a pain in the butt. I started fishing small baits and flukes and the bites were slow to come, i switched to the No Live Bait Needed mini ...

Looks like a fun day. Its funny how we go in trends for fishing styles. I used to fish ultralight setups all the time (spinning and casting) and then went to heavy line stuff. I've recently transitioned back to mostly light action gear here in San Diego now.

Fished the afternoon outgoing tide from ~1pm-4pm.
Tried to film but forgot how after a month of no fishing
A school of bonito and corvina followed in the hooked fish but no other bites from them after i let it go
Landed
1 Bonito
1 short halibut
4 spotted bay bass

Nice job! I usually do good on the round jig heads and wham style jigs. If you want to catch a bunch of big bones like that go paddle around the Quivira basin in Mission Bay close to shore near all the boat slips. Have caught 5-9lb bonito there like it was a wide open tuna bite

Glad you liked it, hoping to do more of this in the sierras at some point! Maybe work on the heritage trout list.

Bad knees, but mostly just lazy so I don't do this kinda thing anymore. But it reminds me of the easy-access spots along Beasore Creek (Near Yosemite), where you only have to hike a little bit to find small, very wild fish in tiny pools.

Fished the back of mission bay, afternoon outgoing tide. Was joping to get on a crankbait bite but they werent into it. Switched to the trusty weedless fluke and the bite was on. Loads of bait in clearish water. Nothing big but fun on light line.

Nice balance on a SUP!
Speaking of which, do you SUP guys use your normal hook set or modify it to keep from losing balance?


A lot of guys sit down to not lose balance. I dont really have that problem, when in san diego, the fish aren't big enough to need to really set the hook that hard ...

Got out 1/2/24 after work for 1.5 hours. Fished the ned rig just outside the cays for 6-7 spotted bay bass. Slow outgoing tide, didnt see much bait and the bites were very soft. Biggest fish was ~12.5", nothing special of a day but good to get out.

Thats a very busy weekend to fish. The sup works great flipping the tullies and getting in realy tight to them.

Original plan was to go throw small flies on the ultra light trout rod at schools of mullet. That changed after spending 1-2 hours and finding only 3 mullet up shallow that didnt want to play. Tossed on the ned rig with a really small fluke and the bite was on. It wasn't a numbers day but very good ...
