Grass. Traffic.
That's my report for the weekend. Grass and traffic.
I'm sure this was partly my fault, as I was only able to get to the beach on Friday and Saturday late afternoon/early evening as the tides were receding and/or already out, but they were WAY out at MB when I arrived. I also ...

How does fall effect surf fishing?
Thinking about heading that way again for a couple of days. I was wondering from the people with experience, how does the fall season effect the species of fish that you catch, sand crab availability, different baits etc. One of the most interesting things about the ocean to me is how different ...

Re: How does fall effect surf fishing?
Thanks, that is the kind of thing I was asking for. Always interesting to see the seasons change. I am torn between heading up to the mountains for some creek fishing, or heading back to the surf. I like fishing the bay too. Spotties are great fighters.

Re: How does fall effect surf fishing?
I have caught some of my largest corbina in the fall.. They may not be as fat as summer corbs, but they are still around...Can't say I've caught as many SFC as in the spring or summer, but the perch and YFC still seem to be as abundant.. And as it cools even more the large, mama perch start showing ...

Re: How does fall effect surf fishing?
Past years I've had some good sessions in October into Nov for corbina & spot fins. Haven't been out for over 2 weeks due to conflicts on the home front so can't give you any fresh intel. Hope to soon.

Re: How does fall effect surf fishing?
There you go, nice ! What did it bite on ? With crabs all but gone, I'll be armed next time out with mussel & clam meat, maybe some freeze dried lug worms also.Everydog wrote: Thu Oct 02, 2025 1:41 pm I did catch a nice spotfin around 20 inches this morning, and other than that, all perch.

Re: North County trips.
summer is fading fast now—time to take out the warmer clothes.
Indeed. My sweatshirts have made their way out of storage bins, and it’s raining as I type this.
Thanks for the report, sounds like you had a nice day! I’ve used the sand crab fishbites and my experiences with those mirror what ...

Re: North County trips.
In a half hour at guard tower 36 in Carlsbad I caught a surf perch and my first corbina on a brown paddle tail grub. This was a receding low tide. I used a hybrid Carolina/Texas rig with the Carolina rig setup and the hook Texas style. It made it through the large quantity of vegetation.

Re: North County trips.
Unfortunately, skunks are always part of it. I'm a creature of habit and tend not to experiment to much, but without trying different things you'll never know what works.. Challenge is good...

Re: North County trips.
Any thoughts on what is the best hook or technique for t-rigging perch grubs?
I used to just hook the grub on a cheap regular j hook. Then, over the last month, there has been so much vegetation, I switched to doing the hook Texas style. The smallest worm hooks are too big for most perch grubs ...

Re: North County trips.
I hear you. I was out this morning from 7 to 9:30 farther up the coast. From 7 to 8:30 nothing, no even a bump. 8:30 to 9:15 only 2 perch, both about 5”.

Re: North County trips.
The day certainly could've been worse and you are correct - the worst day of fishing is better than pretty much any alternativeMidnightpass wrote: Wed Oct 29, 2025 8:15 amAll reports are good... Even the skunks... Nobody likes a skunk, but it beats not fishing...

Mission Beach 11/4
I couldn’t stay away. I got breakfast at Mission while the highest morning tired receded a bit (pic below of the high mark, halfway up the beach to the bike path!!) and made my way to the water.
All things considered, the water was relatively calm. The current was a little strong but not as strong ...

Re: Mission Beach 11/4
Try adding some Cotton to your Mussels. You can really “ bag it” in the threads. Stays on plus grabs the Perches teeth upping your hook set ratio.

Re: North County trips.
I fished Carlsbad near lifeguard tower 36 around high tide. There was one other angler there. He was using what looked like a camo sandworm. I didn't see him catch anything. I was using a 1" red with blue flake curly tail grub and caught one BSP. I had another pull the hook off because I neglected ...

Mission Beach 11/10
Took the day off to create a four-day weekend, so I headed to the shore for some fishing.
Mussels were the bait du jour.
I got there close to 6:30 and fished until about 9:00. Relatively calm morning while the tide was out, but as the clouds burned off and the tide started to come in, the wind ...

Re: "neap" tides
Neap tide with cold water.
Perch are going to perch.
Halibut and other fish. They don't "cruise" as much if at all. They stack up more. I like to find inlets and sources of water movement. For example I'll be heading to Solana beach if my Friday fishing works this week.
Tldr: cast til you find ...
