Sand Spike and Long Casts.

Bomb casting set up with long rods. 11-13 feet.

One thing I've been experimenting with is sending four or five ounces, or up to around 100 yards, to vegetated reef sections. I have had success with 2 ounces plus or minus, and it works well in the sand spike on shorter casts, such as to the first ...

It's just an excuse to sit down and read a book. Seriously, you can catch a lot without going to that trouble, maybe even some sheephead or bump up the Sargo count a little bit. I will let you know!

Re: How does fall effect surf fishing?

This is also my first Fall. I fished year-round and sporadically when I was a kid/teen, but this is the first time I have been fully engaged in Surf Fishing mentally in San Diego. It's starting to have an effect. Crab beds are shrinking, and they are no longer available at as many tide levels in the ...

Re: How does fall effect surf fishing?

I did catch a nice spotfin around 20 inches this morning, and other than that, all perch.

Re: How does fall effect surf fishing?

Hi PK, There are still crabs in Del Mar, at least with today's tide. They are thinning out, though. That's what caught it. Also, throughout the summer, I have not caught a spotfin, of 15, or one corbina, of about 25 or so (small to large), on shrimp. Everything else eats the shrimp, or robs it.

Re: North County trips.

This morning was as calm in mid-Del Mar as I have seen it since June. Not much grass in the water until high tide, but I was leaving then anyway. Kept thinking I should throw the LC, but didn't. I found enough crabs to fish for a few hours, supplemented with a little market shrimp and another test ...

Re: North County trips.

In a half hour at guard tower 36 in Carlsbad I caught a surf perch and my first corbina on a brown paddle tail grub. This was a receding low tide. I used a hybrid Carolina/Texas rig with the Carolina rig setup and the hook Texas style. It made it through the large quantity of vegetation ...

Re: North County trips.

O.k. It's done, took the first of probably several skunks at Del Mar—a few bumps on the grub, which I could fish open hook no problem. A few bumps on a 2" fake blood worm. Surf was 4' high/high-slack tide churned up in the middle of the day.

It was good medicine! I am going to enjoy these skunks! It's the only path to a keeper halibut, at least at the beaches I love.
