A little North - Newport Bay
I have been teaching some Bass Fishing 101 to a local neighborhood kid. He truely loves to fish! We started out fishing our local park lake and within a couple of weeks he was nailing Bass on his own. We practice knots, I show him how to work baits and basic rigging. Yesterday we went on his first ...

Homemade chatterbait, 10lb mono.
I took me 10 tries to get her in the net. Evertime I got her head in, she would back out and shoot down. This fish knew exactly what a net was and exactly how to avoid it. I finally got her in because she was ...

6/24 SD Bay. Not quite Under the Bridge
Woke up to a beautiful day and wanted to be part of it. Plus I've been hitting Barrett hard and needed to look at a different kind of fish for a session.
Fished 1-5pm. Fishing was wide open until about 20 minutes before low tide and then picked up again starting about 40 minutes into the incoming ...

7/2 Closer to Under the Bridge
With Barrett closed on the first Wednesday of the month, I needed a fix. Got to the bridge around 115 with about 3 hours until high tide. Started where it was wide open last time and spent an hour+ for 0 fish. Used the trolling motor for a slow controlled drift and got into a few fish out in ...

Re: Guilty bystander
Fyi- this isnt my pb.
There was a time in the early 90s when i life dream was to catch a legal halibut. I fished the bay every weekend. My first legal was 30" on live bait and eventually i had several under my belt. Soon my fishing dream was catch a legal hali in a lure. Took a couple years, then ...

Re: New to shore fishing and skunked for a week
From your post, it sounds like you have not been surf fishing much, so I would highly recommend giving it a try.
It's funny that you said that, I actually tried surf fishing at mission beach for the first time last week :D . Used a carolina rig with a size 2 mosquito hook and a 1 oz sliding ...

Mission bay 8/3
Haven't posted on here in a long time. Finally, I have the chance to start fishing again more than a few times a year. Was out on Mission Bay from 6am to about noon. Bite died at about 10am. Got a total of 28 unless you count the 9 lizardfish. A mixed bag 2 yellowfin croaker, 1 sculpin, 15 (2 legal ...

Re: Mission bay 8/3
Yeah, I fish heavier when I'm fishing around hard structure. But if I'm fishing grass, I have a lot more fun with the lighter setup.

Croakin' at Mariner's Basin...
Took a trip down Memory Lane with shrimp pump in hand. Historically, good bite on incoming tide and today followed the pattern. '
23 or so fish, seven species. Sand and Spotted Bass, round ray, dink halibut, a buttload of chunky yellowfin croaker, diamond turbot and a rock wrasse.

Re: Summer veens...
Idk, I think it was a halibut. Believe me, I threw big lures in the area for about 4 hours after seeing that.

Good to be back…Big Bay 8-31
Been months since I’ve hit the bay but brought 3 rods to an informal celebration of life this morning. Before spreading ashes we fished Square Mile and just like days of old, chucking plastics and other baits produced spotties and fond memories. Most came on a perch colored minnow pinned to a 3/16 ...

Re: New fish = New rod
This is a great rod for the money, as good as most rods in the $100 range: https://www.tackledirect.com/daiwa-lag701mfb-laguna-trigger-rod.html
I use it in the bay for 1/4 ounce jig heads with 6 lb mono. I like the split grip too but most of those rods have minimal foregrip so I add my own with ...

Mariner’s
Typical session this morning catching spotties then snagged a monster. Was thinking hali at first but after awhile it became dead weight. Towed me around Mariners and finally was able to beach and land the huge mud marlin on 10 lb. Was a fun surprise. Thanks

north island 10/15
My father and I caught some pinky size live smelt off of the Ferry Landing pier then headed to North Island for a two and half hour afternoon session. I was practically skunked landing just a cigar size lizard fish that gulped down one of those pinky size smelts at the end of my hook throughout my ...
