Re: South Bay 11/16

galen wrote: Mon Nov 18, 2024 2:06 pm Has anyone tried eating smelt? According to the internet, they’re not bad table fare.
I've heard they are wormy, but no personal experience... They are stinky, slimy things though...

Re: South Bay 11/16

I was out on a float tube, we probably saw each other at some point. It was an incredible day down there.

I'm in.

Hello all,

Although I seem to only fish one lake, maybe two, I recently expanded my horizons to the ocean. Well, why didn't anyone say anything about how fun it is? Tom Noel (1fishdude) took me out a couple times now and we have had a blast. The numbers are not there yet for me, but it sure is a ...

Mission Bay Fishing: Bass, Barracuda and Halibut

https://youtu.be/dBqh4QFZb9s

Hey all,
I headed out to Mission Bay on Sunday super excited for some quantity of bites. It was a beautiful morning on the water and I hooked up on the 2nd cast with a crank. YES! Here we go...and then nothing for a while. It was actually a pretty tough day on the bay ...

Thanks so much! Actually it was a HUGE stingray. Around 24-30” in diameter. I wish I could have filmed that underwater but I was having issues. Go out and get em’!

Re: SD Bay 12-7, slow

Went out of Tidelands on Sunday. It started out clear and then the fog rolled in. It ended up clearing out around 9am. Then the FOG rolled back in thick at noon. I couldn't see the Bridge from 200 feet away. The fishing started out slow but picked up around 8 and was consistent for the rest of the ...

Re: SD Bay 12-7, slow

Halibut bite has been great lately along the bay side of the Silverstrand. Just look for the pelicans working the schools of micro bait. Had multiple keepers every day from Friday-Sunday and early last week had 6 keepers back to back days with 15+ shorts each day. Key this time of year is to move ...

Can we talk restrooms?

Couple of things.
If you fish the Coronado side, you may find yourself needing to access a restroom, after driving over the bay and drinking two cups of coffee. Some of the restrooms in parks don’t open very early.
Okay, down in the cays area, check the map for 101 grand caribe causeway. This is ...

Re: SD Bay 12-7, slow

28 spotted bay bass on Saturday from the float tube in South Bay, mostly on weedless Ned rig in and around the grass. Definitely slower compared to the recent days with large tide swings.

King Tides Sunday 12-15

Major tide moving out after 8am but maybe the full moon overnight and bluebird skies w cool mornin noreasterlies thwarted a better bite. Started and spent the majority just south of the bridge at Square Mile and then did drifts outside the Cays and the Sweetwater mouth. Threw gulps, ned rigs, and ...

SD Bay in winter

Launched from Cays, got a nice halibut, that pic is my avatar now. Wound up with 47 spotted bay bass and 2 halibut. Most were on a cow pie green (match the hatch???) curly tail grub on a 5/16 ounce ball head jig in 9-15' of water. Slow and low (1/2 crank, pause, repeat) retrieve as usual and feeling ...

Re: San Diego Bay, Crazy Good Fishing!

Sorry but I have read online that fishing slows down in the bay during the winter. You must be catching illiterate fish. Or ones without Internet access.

Party crasher

I had a good spotty bite going and then this guy decides to horn in. Too big for the net, too big for the tube, had to kick to shore just to land it, probably took at least an hour just to land. Released to get bigger. Got on a 5/16 ounce jighead and 4" clear grub, 6 lb test line. 26.8 lbs, PB, my ...

Amazing catch. Unbelievable that you didn’t get chewed off. Where was the jig?

The jig hook caught in the corner of the mouth so the line never even rubbed against the fish. I felt the line afterwards and there wasn't even any abrasion on the line. When I got to shore, I put my rod in the rod ...

San Diego Bay Fishing: I Found Them!

Hey all!

Best color is a clear choice

Saw large schools of 2" slough anchovies in the harbor I was fishing in today. The clear curly tail grub worked better than anything else I tried (full disclosure: did not try a junebug craw though). I used the same lure as 2 weeks ago when I got the 26.8 lb halibut, lure shown below for reference ...
