Giant Blue Catfish on Light Tackle
Got out early at Lower Otay on Wednesday. Crowds were light and I picked up a few bass early AM on finesse swimbaits over the top of the grass. Once the sun came up things slowed down shallow so I went looking for Shad schools out deep. Picked up a couple more 1-2lb bass down in the 40ft range ...

San V Mon 12/11
Slow day for me today. There was absolutely NO breeze today which made it really tough to get bit once the sun got high. Managed 3 early fish on Flukes with the biggest going 4.36. Best fish I’ve gotten out of there in a while. Caught it in about 6” of water busting shad. Definitely less fish in the ...

Re: Go to bait
What's funny to me, is when we last fished at San V together, you and I mostly used our favorite baits.

Why do I feel the need to fish a big swimbait?
Just wanted to take the temperature/get a pulse on this community's take on this.
Why do I feel the need to throw a big swimbait?!
Little background of where my mentality comes from: I come from a (pretty serious) surfing background, but injury has led me to get back into fishing and I am ...

Re: Why do I feel the need to fish a big swimbait?
One note about fishing the big swimbaits...when the big baits came out, there was a much larger supply of big bass in our local lakes. The number of 6lb-12lb bass in our lakes now is definitely down from the 70s-90s, which will make your odds of getting a big fish lower than in the past! You can ...

Lake Murray 12/13
Things were a grind today at the Murr. I fished for 6 hours, and located some large schools in 40+ feet of water. They were suspended 7-10 feet from the bottom. I dropped everything in my box on their heads with nary a nibble.
Finally I switched over to ultralight gear and managed to bring in 3 ...

San V...getting tougher!
I put in 7 hours of hard work yesterday...with only 4 bass landed, and 2 others lost in the trees. The water temp was 59 at sunrise, 61 by 1:00...and it definitely felt like winter at launch. I started out looking for the fish that have been running the brush lines the last couple weeks, but only ...

Re: San V...getting tougher!
Not so secret! Lots of trees.
Ha...the entire lake is pretty much trees from 0'-50' deep...mostly manzanita, sumac, some oaks, and a few sycamores.
Went out yesterday and cold winds in the a.m.. As stated, water 59 and 62 by 2pm. we got our five fish out of the trees, thank you Lord. Saw a ...

Murray 12/18
Biggest bass I've hooked at Murray in a while. He bit on a black Senko with blue flakes. I flipped ot to the edge of the tullies and let it sink. Never even felt the bite, but my line took off so I set I set the hook. I just barely got him turned. He almost buried himself in the reeds.

First Time BFS today at Murray
My new reel arrived yesterday. I pre-ordered it over a month ago. It's an Ark Gravity BFS reel. I paired it with a Ray Fishing 7 ft Tarantula finesse rod, and spooled it with 6lb. nanobraid and a 6lb. flourocarbon leader.
If you'd have told me yesterday that I could cast a tiny 1/16 oz. (or smaller ...

Re: First Time BFS today at Murray
Yeah I fished it today and got a little overrun on that light PE line, but was able to pick it out. It happened casting directly into a stiff wind. Still, after I picked it out, I set the magnets up a few notches and it was fine. I think it's just a matter of getting used to it. But 1 nest in two ...

San V 12/21 damn weathermen
Headed out to San V yesterday all geared up and ready for a rainy, windy, overcast day only to find blue skies and no wind ☹️ Ran to Barona and immediately had fish breaking in the bushes and just outside of them. Missed 4 fish on a small fluke, including one that sharked it from about 40’ away all ...

Re: Go to bait
As I said about split shot reapers earlier…another go-to that I should throw more but for some reason don’t, is a basic Rattletrap, chrome with either a blue or black top. I have caught/found fish on tough days for decades throwing this. If I would just dedicate one of the 4,5,6 sticks I bring to ...

Re: Go to bait
Vinny, funny you mention "retiring" a bait. I was thinking I was alone in doing that, but after a lure has caught a lot of fish, I also retire them. The sad thing here, is that my retirees were in a box that has now been misplaced. I had planned to make a little shadow box of them for my office.

The chocolate/ blue vein worm. Still one of my main colors. Works in any lake and any water clarity. Absolutely love throwing a crawdad color lipless crankbait from now through the spawn!
