Re: Mission Bay 12/22
Nice balance on a SUP!
Speaking of which, do you SUP guys use your normal hook set or modify it to keep from losing balance?
A lot of guys sit down to not lose balance. I dont really have that problem, when in san diego, the fish aren't big enough to need to really set the hook that hard ...

Re: All these lagoons…
Hedionda is open for fishing but had a massive fish kill with the big red tide a few years ago. It's making a comeback but it's significantly slower than it used to be. Batiquitos and San Diguito I think you are only allowed to fish west of the coast highway. Man would I love to get my kayak into ...

Re: All these lagoons…
Yea it’s definitely about finding access to these places, which I have very little knowledge of and don’t want any angry Karen’s ruining my day! @JWall I have plenty of rooster tails since I do a lot of eastern sierra trout fishing. I just need to suck it up and get out to these lagoons. My ...

S Bay After Work
Got out 1/2/24 after work for 1.5 hours. Fished the ned rig just outside the cays for 6-7 spotted bay bass. Slow outgoing tide, didnt see much bait and the bites were very soft. Biggest fish was ~12.5", nothing special of a day but good to get out.

Re: All these lagoons…
I used to fish Agua Hedionda's outer lagoon. Shore fishing is legal.
If the lagoon's being dredged (happens every few years, don't know if it'll happen this year), it stirs up the food and the bite can be insane for sargo and spotfin croaker and other species. Emphasis on "can be." It can also suck ...

Re: New Angler Seeking Gear Recommendations – Help Needed!
Great questions by Pipster. I would argue to start out like any other sport of hobby, start small and work your way up.
A cheap spinning combo (~$30-50) from your typical sporting goods store, 7 feet medium action will work, 10 lb nylon fishing line, size 6 hooks, and some weights (0.5 -1 oz). I ...

Re: New Angler Seeking Gear Recommendations – Help Needed!
If you are just fishing lakes and the bays from shore (not saltwater piers), then IMO it's hard to beat this combo for value. Not joking when I say it's as good as combos >2x the price.

Re: New Angler Seeking Gear Recommendations – Help Needed!
Regardless of gear, be sure to rinse off all your gear and tackle after each trip. Otherwise it is going to corrode, sometimes enough to be worthless even before the next trip. If you change the hooks, sinkers, lures, etc. then put the old ones in a plastic bag and rinse them out too when you get ...

Son’s First Halibut in Mission Bay 1/13
Rented a skiff to bond with my son. Didn’t have hi expectations especially since we are beginners. Was about to call it a day and he snagged a legal halibut on live sardine. He was so pumped and now is addicted.

SD Bay 1/20
Original plan was to go throw small flies on the ultra light trout rod at schools of mullet. That changed after spending 1-2 hours and finding only 3 mullet up shallow that didnt want to play. Tossed on the ned rig with a really small fluke and the bite was on. It wasn't a numbers day but very good ...

Re: SD Bay 1/20
You should have stayed for the rain. The bite just turned on when that happened. Had 5 fish in 6 casts when it started coming down.
