Re: San Diego Bay, Crazy Good Fishing!
Great catching and nice legal!! First…that vintage trap almost resembles a baby spottie with the colors and pattern? Second, butts love the smelt. A hundred years ago on the San Dieguito River just east of the race track we used to toss out bread pieces to call them to the surface and would scoop ...

Midway Sculpin
Plenty of sculpin next to the midway. Dropper loop rig with market shrimp on size 4 hooks works great. Lots of small ones, but definitely enough keepers to make it worth an afternoon. Don’t cast far—they’re right by your feet.

Tackle Warehouse has good ones. Big eye so they don’t hang up on the split ring.
I will be ordering as well. I found a pack of single hooks in my garage tackle store that were the right size but normal eye ...

Coronado Cays after the storm, yuck
Went out to the Cays Monday after the weekend storm to find the waters full of trash. What also looked like a slick of sewage in the channel was not something anyone wants to see either. Once the outgoing tide kicked in, the water slowly cleaned up.

Re: San Diego Bay Fishing: I Found Them!
FYI, an easy way to make underspins and other baits weedless is to add a jig spinner which also adds extra flash. They were hammering the underspin with it a few weeks ago for me. Add a swivel about 12-24" before it and that will catch most of the dead grass too.

Re: Coronado Cays after the storm, yuck
Thanks for the update! Those heads are my go to for sure. They are inexpensive easy to use and most importantly they work great! I'll be posting my Sunday trip to the bay shortly. Cheers!
The same company also makes a swing head style jig that is VERY inexpensive compared to others. 20 of these ...

Re: Coronado Cays after the storm, yuck
Another inexpensive swinging jig head option is to use a Cheburashka sinker and the hook of your choice. Nice thing about this is that you can use a finer wire hook which gives more hookups and a better float to a Zman Ned bait than a thick wire hook found on most swinging jig heads.

I love fishing in the rain! I was warm and dry (except for hands and face, though I do have some nice neoprene gloves) and catching fish. What more could I ask for.

Re: San Diego Bay Fishing: I Found Them!
Would love to see you hookup on some more of those Corvinas. It seems like when you get one you get a few. At least that's the way it goes for me?
There some guys that have gotten them on topwater. Even on the rat. I have tried it and never got a blowup.
Thanks for the videos and brews!

Re: San Diego Bay Fishing: I Found Them!
Your videos are beneficial for getting over second-guessing bay fishing. A trip with FIshtricks also greatly demystified things. I have done about half a dozen visits from Zuniga jetty to Pepper Park, all in the Kayak, so it's time for the being fishy part to kick in, at least on some trips!

Re: Big Bay Sunday 2-2 Spotties MIA
Hey John, just seeing this post. We were out there the same day! Interesting experience for us as well -- the spotties were oddly few and far between. We had some variety though -- caught quite a few smelt, a small flounder, a large ray, a few small halibut, and this one -- just an inch under a ...

For us it was a decent day -- especially if I don't read the forums where folks are catching 50+ solo! We caught around 20 total and had a blastJWall wrote: Thu Feb 20, 2025 12:48 pm That’s a beaut!! Good job fighting thru what was a slower day for myself and others!

Tidelands Sunday
Only got seven spotties, but a nice day on the water.
Three of the bass were decent sized, 13 to 14 inches.

Re: Tidelands Sunday
I was out on Saturday, saw the rays as well. Those osprey have no shame! Had a nice streak jigging in 35 ft just north of Tidelands. That was about it.
