Re: Braid and Leader Line

10lb Braid to 12lb Fluoro is what we use 90% of the time. Really not a ton of benefit to fishing lighter then 12lb unless the water is clear or your targeting a more line shy species like Bonefish. Spotties eat 12lb just fine and you'll be glad you have it if you hook something bigger

Re: Braid and Leader Line

Just my two cents... Maxima "Ultragreen." (my fav) No leader necessary unless targeting toothy critters.

Re: Finally Happened- South Bay

That’s a catch for sure.
This bonefish is probably my biggest from a month ago. Bit a 4” white swimbait on a Warbaits Neckbreaker of all things. Barely had it hooked with their smaller hard mouth.

Re: PB Spotty

The only lures that I have tried and never caught a spotty on are topwaters like poppers and spooks. But I did catch a halibut in shallow water on a popper once. Anything that is near the bottom and moves looks like food to a spotty. Some lures are better than others, they don't work equally well ...

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

The casting of a bare heavy weight to “wet pack” the line is a great idea… my wife used to fish spinning a lot in the past and when we would leave the dock, I would let all her line out behind the boat (nothing attached) and pack it back on, pretty much solved any spinning reel issues throughout the ...

Del Mar afternoon 07/26

Fished Del Mar for a few hours late afternoon. Crowds weren’t too bad. Water was dirty but not too much salad to snag on. Started off with landing two small YFC right away. Nothing for the next hour or so until this Corvina took a liking to the Gulp Sandworms of all things. Fought much harder and ...

Re: Mission Beach 8/3

It happened to all of us at one time or another. Bad vibe, bad smell, wrong way of standing, who knows. Sometimes you just can’t buy a bite, and others , well it just gets embarrassing…can’t fight them off with a stick.

It makes no sense, lol. Just gotta learn to take the good days with bad ...

Pacific Beach 8/14

A short late AM session just south of pier. Clean water, better than expected conditions, tide incoming at about 4' at 10 am. Lug worms & mussel the bait of choice today. Good perch bite, best 2 hits turned out to be 2 guitar fish, both around 2'. 6 perch in the mix, all 6-8". Called it at 11:30 as ...

Torrance Beach 22 Sept 2025

I made a few long casts with hard shells and found a couple of croaker. Then I found some soft shells and it was fun times catching corbina in close.

Re: Big Low tides

From Friday. This one came about 3 feet from the sand, right at the drop-off, probably no more than 2-3 feet deep. This trough ran about 40 yards parallel to the beach adjacent to a small reef. I believe baitfish use these depressions to move up and down the shoreline and just beneath the white ...

I made it to the beach for an hour. Found 5 sand crabs and converted 2 of them to on back-to-back casts.

Huntington Beach 5-1-22

A no-fish report… Got plenty of sand crabs at the depot, then headed to Huntington… Pretty flat, with no visible structure… There was a shallow trench almost dry that would fill and maybe be fishable at high tide… Only fished from 6:30-8:30 for not a single nibble.. talked to a few other anglers and ...

Re: Trolling motor wiring help

Also, not a bad idea to glop the connections with dielectric grease, especially if they could get exposed to salt water spray. Scuffing up the battery terminals and wire terminals with a wire brush gives a better connection. Getting a good, tight crimp is critical too. I personally prefer solder ...

Re: Clips or No Clips

IMHO, no clips. Fresh knots can be a blessing in disguise. If you need a loop for a lure to swim free like a jerk bait or top water, learn the rapala knot. Super quick. And you can even tie a double rapala knot for heavy stuff with lighter line. Never had the rapala knot fail. My pb 13lb bass was on ...

Happy Stocking Day!

On most days, the city pond is just water and grass blending into East LA. But every so often, it hosts an event. You can tell because people start showing up early and standing around doing nothing in particular until the show starts.

The cormorants know first. They always do. They appear in ...

The 15 Pounder

It was a random Saturday in April where my tournament partner and I actually had the day off. Normally Saturdays start with alarms going off at ungodly hours and us finishing our sleep in the launch ramp line somewhere two hours away.

Not today.

Instead of a road trip, we made the grueling five ...
