Took a trip down Memory Lane with shrimp pump in hand. Historically, good bite on incoming tide and today followed the pattern. '
23 or so fish, seven species. Sand and Spotted Bass, round ray, dink halibut, a buttload of chunky yellowfin croaker, diamond turbot and a rock wrasse.

Re: Shark/Ray fishing De Anza
When I fish for Bat Rays I would go to the west side of Leisure Lagoon. Throw my line towards Fiesta Island . But have not done it in a long time.

Re: Shark/Ray fishing De Anza

Which lead me to believe I either wasn't getting my line out far enough or I was just in the wrong area. Are you casting out ...

Mission Beach 8/17
Spent a few hours at Mission Beach again today, and showed up to calm waters and a late arriving “high” tide. Sand crabs were plentiful but the bite was pretty slow. Reeled in a few times to see my crabs picked over without even feeling bites some of the time!

Re catching spotfins, just keep doing what you're doing. They will hit a lot of different baits, mussel, blood worms & ghost shrimp ...

Re: New to the surf, Torrey Pines 8/17
They will come. I got Whitefish last year. They are normally fairly deep water fish associated with rocks. There nickname is Razorgilled Bottom Dorado. That sort of says it all. I caught about 12 that day.
